GETTING STARTED

As you begin to think about the features you'd like to see in an integrated home entertainment, communication, automation and security system, here's a few things to keep in mind:
  • It all starts with the wiring: If you're building or remodelling your home, wire it with a plan for future needs. A structured wiring system is the infrastructure that allows you to network your home today and gives you the flexibility to create a home theatre tomorrow.

  • Understand the difference between electrical and cable: Just as you wouldn't consider having a room without electrical outlets, today's homes need every room equipped with voice, data, and video capability. Wire to standard, not just to code and have it done by a cable installer, not an electrician.

  • Pay now or pay later: In new or renovated homes, it's much easier and less costly to design and install structured cabling during construction before the walls are up and the insulation completed. Talk with your architect or builder as early as possible.

  • Don't be product or brand name driven: Many of the best audio/visual systems and components are not widely known to most consumers.

  • Don't overlook security systems: Security should be integrated into your overall design, not treated as a stand alone system …

  • Plan a space for a wiring closet: The hub of a good wiring system needs a space for a distribution center, where the services that enter the home can be directed into your designed system.

  • Learn the "Lingo": Electronic and networking systems have a language of their own. Check out the terminology page under helpful hints.

  • HDTV, LCD, Plasma Displays, Rear Projection, etc: See Above.

  • Expect User Friendly: Control systems and remote controls should be programmed to allow ease in understanding and operation. Insist on integration, not just installation.

  • Plan for HDTV now - High Definition TV is the new digital standard for enhanced picture quality for TV broadcasting. If you're buying a new TV or video projector, make sure you'll be able to enjoy the incredible sound and pictures that are part of HDTV.

  • Think with your wallet, but lead with your head - Quality and long-term dependability are the most cost effective attributes that you can build into a home plus there's a good reason why you can buy a 42 inch plasma TV for $2,500 on the internet or a discount electronics store - it's the quality, plain and simple.
